Outlets, Outlets, Outlets!!!

One thing about moving to NJ is that in about every 20-30 miles you can encounter an outlet mall and there is no sales tax.  Some time ago, one would think that the outlets was filled with "B-Grade" items or miss-cut clothing.  However this is no longer the case.  One can find that these outlets carry items that are first rate.
Everyone loves a bargain, or what one thinks is a bargin..heehee, especially if it involves shopping for name brand clothes, such as Polo, Nike, and even Gucci.  I tend to frequent the Nike Outlet the most since one can actually find "rare/limited" sneakers.  And my all time favorite outlet is the Barney's outlet.  So, when the wallet doesn't allow for shopping in SoHo, LES, or 5th Ave. I head straight to the outlets to feed the hunger...ha.

Here is an example of some finds that I got while at Woodbury Commons

Barney's New York Velour (made in Italy) Driving Mocs Retail - $300.00
Outlet Price - $149.00
Adidas ZXZ Felt by Kuraishi Kazuki of fragement design
Retail $180.00 Outlet - $118.00
(I got these for $59.00 since the Barney's New York Outlet was having a "Buy 1, Get another 1/2 off)

Rugby Bow-Tie
Retail - $35.00
Outlet - $10.00 (Clearance)
Rugby Socks
Retail - $19.50
Outlet - $5.00 (Clearance)
Happy Socks (2-pack) for Barneys NY COOP
Retail - $30.00
Outlet - $12.00

Here is a few points from Put This On
They came up with a great summary of what one can expect from outlet shopping. And I've included a few of my thoughts after each bullet
  • Ralph Lauren has both “Polo” and “Ralph Lauren” outlets.  The Ralph Lauren outlets are pricier, but carry only actual Polo overstocks and Purple Label stuff.  Some, we’ve heard, have recently switched to women’s wear only.  Discounts at these outlets are good but not great.  The Polo outlets are primarily “planned overstock” made for the outlet stores.  The quality is not amazing, though probably not much worse than other Polo items in their categories.  The tailored clothes are mostly Lauren, which is a low-quality line.  There are usually one to three racks, however, which have Polo, RRL and even Purple Label.  Learn to spot these racks, and you can do very, very well.  (Mike notes that the Polo outlets are a great source of cheap bedding.)
    • Very true! I have come across many nice pieces but the price is a little higher than expected from outlets. However, if you head to the clearance sections, which are way in the back, you can come across some great finds. Especially if you are looking for new accessories such as ties, socks, and belts.  I found some great "Rugby" items while digging through the clearance section.
  • Brooks Brothers outlets are similar.  Three quarters or more of their stock is from the “346” line, which is made specifically for the outlets.  There are often bargains hidden amongst the 346, however.  Some stores have shoes, including the high-end Peal & Co. line.  Some have Black Fleece, the fashion-forward line designed by Thom Browne, and some have Golden Fleece, the fuddy-duddy but very high quality line.  Check the labels.
  • Allen Edmonds outlets mostly have discontinued shoes and seconds.  The prices aren’t a huge reduction from retail, with the exception of seconds.
  • Gap, Banana Republic and J. Crew sell exclusively clothes made for the outlets.  Not even worth a visit.
    • Gap and Banana Republic are not worth the trip, as far as Men's clothing goes, unless you really need to find some cheap pants for work.
    • J.Crew isn't that bad though, especially since in the last few years J. Crew has revamped their Men's line.
    • Department store outlets are typically a mix.  Neiman Marcus Last Call has the most very-high-end merchandise, and sometimes it can come at a very deep discount.  Their normal prices, though, are reduced but not a crazy bargain.  Saks Off 5th has a lot more baloney (read: tattoo t-shirts) to sift through, but again, there can sometimes be wheat amongst the chaff.  They run frequent specials and sales, and sometimes you can score.  The Barney’s Outlets have a lot of store-brand stuff, but sometimes there is something great amongst the sportswear.
      • Again, here they mention Barney's! One can find everything from Band of Outsiders, Gant, and Steven Alan button-ups
    • Ferragamo, Gucci, Chloe outlets sometimes have decent selection, but markdowns aren’t huge.
      • Unfortunately, even with a mild discount, I can't afford anything in here..haha
    • Levi’s outlets infrequently stock LVC (Levi’s Vintage Clothing) and other higher-end merchandise.
      • If you're looking for some 501 shrink to fits or the regular denim truckers jacket go here!

    Got Mine...Did You get Yours?

I posted earlier the report that KidRobot was releasing a De La Soul 3-Pack and I finally received mine. I decided to set them up and display them with the Nike Dunk SB released back in 2005, which was also inspired by their "3 Feet High and Rising" album.

    Duffle Bag

I have been searching high and low for a nice weekend bag and I think I found it. But now I need to head to the lab and sell some plasma to buy it! Damn!

Wexler & co type ii duffle bag at J. Crew
The Duffle is made from the finest leather from Chicago’s legendary Horween Leather Company; expect some awesome patina with this bag.  Besides the excellent leather the bag is carefully lined with water-resistant waxed canvas.  The bag not only looks amazing, but it is meant to last a lifetime.

The Higher Learned: St. Alfred All Day

Check out this excerpt from the interview by The Higher Learned crew of my friends at Saint Alfred in Chicago

Since opening their doors in 2005, St. Alfred has brought a refreshing and blinding light into the street wear and footwear world of Chicago. Located in Wicker Park, St. Alfred’s rock solid position in the culture has garnered great loyalty from customers around the world. Recently, The Higher Learned sat down with St. Alfred’s store Manager Krabby and sales associates Dawud and Rick to speak about the influence St. Alfred has with the streetwear and footwear generation in Chicago.

THL: When did St. Alfred first open their doors?

Krabby: We opened in August of 2005.

THL: What was the main reason behind choosing the name St. Alfred? What was the inspiration?

Krabby: There are four owners of St. Alfred they picked the name. The name is actually supposed to convey the concept, so it’s almost mystic. You hear the Saint and your thinking on the religious side,  then you think Alfred and it sounds kind of formal, like European or British. The concept of St. Alfred was to be a modern classic or new men’s classic coming from street wear and escaping from that side. It’s not conforming to the corporate side of what other people are already doing. The store is very minimal, really focusing or highlighting the selection in the store. That is the meaning behind the       name St. Alfred it is to be select.

THL: Why do you think the customer’s continue to be loyal to St. Alfred?

Krabby:  As far as St. Alfred goes, we spend a lot of time trying to find brands that other people aren’t already selling. And not only brands that people aren’t selling, but good brands. Even before I was working here, that’s what I was doing. It seems like anyone who is into streetwear just appreciates design or just cool shit. It’s a passion when finding something new that you didn’t know about and bringing it to Chicago and selling it. We try to offer more of an exclusive shopping experience by not having brands that other people do, even with the footwear. Two years ago it was just all Nike, now we have A-Life, Puma, Generic Surplus, Vans. Chicago is a huge city but it’s very small at the same time. We try to make it so when you come to the store, you’ll only see certain brands here. And to me that’s the best. I used to travel to shop, because I couldn’t get it in Chicago. Any where.

    Happy Birthday Steve McQueen!

I was introduced to Steve McQueen through my dad's love for classic cars.  My dad told me about this movie called Bullitt.   Along with Steve McQueen being the star, the movie featured a dark "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 CID Fastback.  This vehicle drew me to the proclaimed "King of Cool" of the 1960's.  As my affinity to vintage fashion and fashion icons progressed, Steve McQueen's image and style continually come up in the conversation. From his Tag Heuer Monoco to the Persol glasses that he rocked, Steve McQueen's "look" became classic and continues to be inspiration for many fashion houses and look books.  Hopefully, one day I can drive around in that '68 Mustang!
If you don't know go see The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Bullitt, and Le Mans and get your learn on. This guys puts Brad Pitt to shame!

    Happy Birthday Steve McQueen (March 24, 1930 – November 7, 1980)

Here's a few of my favorites...

First immortalized on Steve McQueen’s wrist in the 1970 racing film, Le Mans, the original Monaco, with its big, squared-off case and truly avant-garde Chronomatic Calibre 11—the first chronograph movement with an automatic micro-rotor mechanism—is a mythical icon of modern watchmaking history.
This time piece will be mine someday!!!

    Nike Japan

Staying on the Japan theme this morning. I almost forgot to post these Nike Terminators that my good friend picked up for me while on her trip to Japan.

Nike Japan released a new Rivals Pack of two Terminator High Premium TZ sneakers, the TZ in the name is presumably for Tier Zero, but these shoes were sold in their respective cities.  The premium, tumbled leather appears on the toe and heel panels, while smooth leather appears elsewhere. The tongue appears to be nylon, while the heel panel appears to be made of mesh. On the heel of the right sneaker, just above a few spots of green seen through tiny perforations, the letters CTST appear, representative of “Cat Street”–a popular shopping district. On the left are the letters “HRJK” which refer to Harajyuku .The real standout part of the model is the use of neon green piping, and a glow-in-the-dark sole a la Yeezy.  These of course did not make it stateside and where available only in Harajuku, Japan. Thanks Cheryl!!!

    Converse Japan

Why does Japan always get all the good stuff? I am crossing my fingers that these come stateside.
